How to Come Up With a Name for Your Brand

A simple step-by-step guide to creating a unique, meaningful and memorable business name.

Coming up with a business name can feel difficult, especially when every idea sounds generic or already taken. A strong name should connect to your business, feel memorable and give you room to grow.

Here is a simple process you can follow.

1. Get clear on what you are naming

Start by describing the business, product or service in one simple sentence.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I selling?
  • Who is it for?
  • What should the brand feel like?
  • What makes it different?

You do not need a perfect brand strategy yet. You just need enough direction to choose words that feel connected to the idea.

2. Build a word bank

Write down words connected to:

  • your industry
  • your audience
  • the result you provide
  • the feeling of the brand
  • visual ideas
  • unexpected words

For example, a skincare brand might explore words such as:

glow, ritual, calm, dew, skin, soft, bloom and aura.

Do not judge the words too quickly. The goal is to create options before choosing your strongest ones.

3. Choose your strongest words

Pick the words that feel:

  • easy to say
  • easy to remember
  • connected to the business
  • visually interesting
  • flexible enough for the brand to grow

Choose two or three words to experiment with.

4. Use naming formulas

Instead of waiting for the perfect name to appear, use a formula.

Combine words

Glow + Aura = Gloura

Remove letters

Exclusive = Lusive

Change the spelling

Design = DSGN

Shorten a phrase

Iconic Style = Iconist

Blend opposites

Sweet + Savage = Sweet Savage

Use a sound-alike

Culture = Kulcha

Try several formulas using the same words. One word bank can create many different directions.

5. Create a shortlist

Choose around five names and compare them.

Ask:

  • Is it easy to pronounce?
  • Does it match the brand personality?
  • Would someone remember it tomorrow?
  • Does it still work if the business expands?
  • Does it look good written down?

Avoid choosing a name only because it sounds trendy. It should still make sense for the business.

6. Check the name before using it

Before making a final decision, check:

  • business name availability
  • domain availability
  • social media usernames
  • existing trademarks
  • similar businesses in your industry

A generated name is an idea, not confirmation that it is legally available.
